There are things in life we want; there are things in life we need. And though we may not want to pay for car insurance, if we drive, we need it. Not only is it illegal in most states to drive without car insurance, it’s unbiased plain dumb. What you might be paying in the long haul is potentially far higher than any auto insurance rate.
Here are a few layman tips for buying auto insurance on a budget.
1. Don’t drive like a maniac. People with dreadful driving records pay more for insurance. So, if you want cheap auto insurance, keep yourself ticket and accident free.
2. Stop smoking. People who smoke usually pay higher premiums. (at least that’s what my car insurance agent told me….after I told him I was a smoker.)
3. Stop shacking up and get married -okay, this one may not be for everybody. But married drivers pay less than unmarried folks.
4. Well-organized up your credit. Bad credit is a good reason for auto insurance companies to hike up your rates.
5. If applicable, consume advantage of multi-car discounts. You will pay a lot less for car insurance if you achieve two cars on the same policy than you would if you paid them both separately. When buying auto insurance on a budget, this is a good one to know.
6. Get a gawk at your driver’s describe and check for mistakes. Mistakes happen, and you don’t want them to affect your insurance rate. It helps to be ‘in the know’ so you can correct any errors. (this applies to your credit as well)
7. Live close to your work, and minimize your driving. People who have lower mileage will pay less for car insurance.
8. Do you own your home? If you own your own home you might consider contacting your home insurance company to survey if they can insure your car too.
9. Don’t be afraid to get quotes from other companies. I have personally walked into car insurance companies for the sole purpose of getting a quote, only to pace right back out. Another great tip for buying car insurance on a budget is to do price comparisons online.(you’ll save gas too)
10. If you have not purchased a vehicle yet, but are planning to, find out how different vehicles compare. Sporty vehicles come with hefty insurance rates, and understandably so. They are usually driven faster, harder, and by younger people. Very colossal vehicles are more expensive to insure also. Modest family vehicles that get high in safety ratings usually get lower quotes. (Go soccer mom!)
Cheap car insurance is out there, but it’s not for everyone, every car, or even with every company. Find out what’s out there, know where you stand in the mix, and see what you can change.
